Description: As many of you know, I love orcas. What you may not know is my favorite population of orca, the Southern Resident Killer Whales, are gravely endangered, and we need to help them. Did you hear of the mother orca who carried her deceased calf for 18 days straight? That was Tahlequah, also known as J35. Her calf died because Tahlequah was starving all while pregnant and could not provide enough for her calf to be born strong and able to survive. Did you hear of the 3 year old calf named Scarlet, who was brought into this world with orca midwives helping her mother birth her? We watched her slowly starve to death and took her out of this world. This population is endangered because they are not finding enough fish. How come? Us humans dammed off the rivers their primary food source, the chinook salmon, spawn in! We interfere with their hunting with military testing and freighter boats that pollute their waters with noise! The only thing that will keep this population alive is having enough food! WE need to breach the dams, cease chinook salmon fishing, and cease salmon farming in their waters (it endangers the wild supply of salmon).
